While the first production catalytic converter was developed in the early 1970s at the Englehard Corporation in New Jersey, the actual history of the device stretches way back in time from then.
Amazingly, the first prototypes were designed in France back in the late 1800s! Then, Eugene Houdry, after serving France during the First World War, moved to the US in 1930. He patented the catalytic converter after becoming concerned about truck smokestack exhaust emissions. A couple of decades later, he turned his interest to gasoline engines in cars.
